The Basilica of the Immaculate Mother of Graces in Niepokalanów
Niepokalanów, Poland

Since the beginning of its statehood, Poland has been and continues to be closely associated with Christianity. Catholic values, living faith, and culture have been closely linked to its history throughout the years. Unfortunately, its geopolitical location means that wars and armed conflicts have often swept through Poland. In extremely difficult moments, it was thanks to the Church that the Poles managed to defend their identity and national independence. A special event in the history of Poland was the coronation of the image of Our Lady of Czestochowa in 1717. The crowns worn at the time were a reference to King John Casimir's “Vows of Lvov,” proclaiming Our Lady as Queen of Poland. In 1795, Poland completely disappeared from the map of Europe due to political configurations at the time. Through the period of successive national uprisings, to the Nazi occupation and the era of communist subjugation, to the present day, it is the Church in Poland that became the place that points not only the way to salvation, but also nurtures love for the homeland. On May 3, 1966, during the celebration of the 1,000th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland, Primate Stefan Wyszynski made the solemn “Act of Surrender to the Maternal Slavery of Mary, Mother of the Church, for the Freedom of the Church of Christ.” The country’s devotion to Mary is remarkably associated with the very center of Poland and the small town founded by Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe, Niepokalanów. In the 1980s, Niepokalanów acquired international significance, due largely to a visit by Pope John Paul II, and pilgrims traveled to the site not only from Europe but also from the United States, Canada and Japan. Overlooking the sanctuary is the Temple of Our Lady Immaculate of All Graces. The act of devotion to the Immaculate, according to Saint Maximilian, is a sincere message for the greatest and strongest possible growth of the glory of Jesus in strayed souls, and the way to expand the Kingdom of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is through His perpetual adoration. This is the only way Mary gives the grace of conversion and sanctification. It is through her hands that all graces flow down from the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The church at Niepokalanów became a World Center of Prayer for Peace on September 1, 2018, and the 8th star in Mary’s crown. May we learn, from Saint Maximilian Kolbe and the Immaculate Blessed Virgin Mary, to adore Jesus hidden in the fragile host of the Blessed Sacrament. It is only in Him that we will find peace for the world and above all, peace for our own hearts and true faith, hope and love.
