The Sanctuary of the Mother of the World

Kibeho, Rwanda
Est. May 31, 2018

Kibeho is a small village located in southwestern Rwanda, Africa. Reported Marian apparitions there began on November 28, 1981, at a time of increasing tension between the Tutsi and Hutu groups. The "Shrine of Our Lady of Kibeho" was erected in 1992. The apparitions included visions of Rwanda descending into violence and hatred which many believe foretold the 1994 Rwandan genocide. The escalation and fueling of tensions between Rwandans led ordinary citizens to take up arms against their neighbors during the Rwandan genocide. The genocide, which lasted only 100 days, spread throughout the country with shocking speed and brutality. As many as 800,000 people were murdered and another 2 million refugees fled Rwanda. The genocide devastated the country causing physical and psychological damage to survivors and leaving 75,000 children who lost one or both parents. These painful experiences have left many physical and spiritual wounds that still require healing.
